The How and Why of Prospecting
If you are a network marketer, whether online or offline, there will come a point and time when you will need to pick up the phone to call and talk to your prospects. It is at this very point where most network marketers fail.
They fail either because they have no idea of what to say and do once they get a prospect on the phone, or because they will not even pick up the phone in the first place. Why is this?
Many network marketers have an over-whelming ‘fear’ of the phone. It is because of this ‘fear’ that many network marketers do not even attempt to pick up the phone in the first place.
- A fear of saying the wrong thing
- A fear of rejection
- A fear of making a mistake and looking like a fool in the eyes of the prospect
The funny part is, that the prospect more than likely has no idea how to prospect themselves, so therefore had no idea that a mistake was even made. Besides if you think about it…your on a phone, not face to face. So it’s not likely the prospect’s ever going to see you again.
You see it’s our fears that hold us back from becoming better, and becoming all we can be. It all started when you were little. Getting picked on by siblings or playmates, and continued all the way through our school years. But it is those who rise above their fears and face them head on, bettering themselves, that become the winners in life and in business.
So why do prospecting in the first place? Is it to torture us network marketers? No, you need to do it because it is the life blood of your business! And without prospecting, your businesses would not grow and you would not make any money. And after all, isn’t that why you chose to do network marketing and working from home in the first place? So you could make money?
So no matter what your reason is, if you do not pick up the phone and talk to prospects, your business will fail and die. How do you learn the proper techniques of prospecting? Here is a great starting point. The What, Who, And How of Internet Marketing
Many new people going into Internet marketing have no idea about the basics of what they are doing. In this article post I will explain about the proper what, who, and how of Internet marketing.
Now I know that most new Internet marketers are told to go out and market their primary opportunity. And when you asked most newbie Internet marketers ‘what’ they are marketing, they will tell you the name of their primary opportunity. And this is exactly what they were taught as well. But this is absolutely, 100%, the wrong answer!
So ‘what’ should a newbie Internet marketer be marketing? Themselves or their self brand and nothing else. This is the ‘YouInc’ factor of Internet marketing and/or ‘self branding’. You first and foremost brand your self as a leader in your industry and nothing else. You learn and do all you can, so you become of value to others in your industry. Being knowledgeable and valuable in your industry gives you the ability to be seen as a leader. So you brand your self as a valuable leader in your industry, and you market your self, group, or team. People buy people, not companies, opportunities or compensation plans.
The concept of self branding opens the door for a whole another topic and article post. So more on that a different time.
Now let’s go to the ‘who’ of Internet marketing. Do you know who your target market is? This is the ‘who’ of Internet marketing. It’s your target audience, or who you are trying to market to. Now most people have no clue as to the techniques used to acquire a specific, and proper target market. And again this goes back to how they were taught to do things in Internet marketing. It is not your friends, families and neighbors as many have been taught by their predecessors. This kind of marketing will only land you a spot in the ‘NFL‘ club or no friends left club.
If you are in Internet marketing and you have branded your self as a leader, then you are more than likely looking to Internet marketers as your target market. Now understand this totally depends on what you are marketing. If you are marketing toilet seats and toothbrushes, your target market is not Internet marketers. The methods used to find your target market are again a topic for another article post.
So let’s move on to the ‘how’ of Internet marketing. There are basically three methods you can use to market.
- The paid methods, like pay-per-click, which can get very expensive very quickly
- The free methods, which obviously take much longer to accomplish your goals
- A delicate balance of both, paid and free methods, depending on your budget
Now not to sound repetitive here, but the ‘how of Internet marketing is a topic for a whole another article post.
But let’s recap for a minute. You need to market ‘you’ as a leader, which is your ‘what’ of Internet marketing. Your target audience is the ‘who’ of Internet marketing. And paid, free, or a combination of both methods is the ‘how’ of Internet marketing. Until you get the what, who, and how down correctly for Internet marketing, you should go no further or you will just be wasting both your time and hard earned money, with very little success.
